Trump's Woke Warning Misses The Continent's Real Danger: Technological Stagnation.

Donald Trump's national security strategy presents a flawed view of Europe. The document asserts that open-border policies and what it terms "woke" agendas represent an existential threat to European civilization. However, this perspective is based on a serious misreading of the reality. The true danger confronting the EU is not cultural but economic and technological lag.

A Glaring Economic Divide Between the US and Europe

Statistics reveal a stark picture. From 2008 and 2023, US GDP surged by 87%, while a mere 13.5% increase for the European Union. Over this period, European income per person dropped from over three-quarters to just half of the American figure. Strikingly, even Mississippi now boasts a higher per capita income than several leading European economies like France and Italy.

Currently, about half of the world’s 50 largest tech companies are US-based, while a mere four are from Europe.

The Innovation Shortfall: A Critical Problem

This widening disparity is driven by stronger productivity growth in the US, largely due to technological innovation and better use of resources. The landscape of world technology leadership is decidedly American. Over the past fifty years, 241 US firms have scaled into companies valued at over ten billion dollars, compared with only fourteen in the European continent.

This gap raises a pressing issue: As the competition for future industries like AI, semiconductors, and fusion energy, where does the EU stand? Experts widely concede it is largely a two-horse race between the United States and China, with European nations entering at a significant disadvantage.

Root Causes of the Continent's Innovation Gap

A number of major reasons explain this technological divide.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The US boasts a much more robust and more dynamic network for funding startups. Europe still lacks a genuine unified investment market, which limits the scale of new firms.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Complex and divided rules hinder Europe. A US startup can launch a service under a single regulatory framework to access a consumer base of over 330 million. The European Union, despite a larger population size, is divided among 27 separate systems, creating huge market obstacles.
  • Mindset Differences: Attitudes toward entrepreneurial failure vary greatly. In some EU nations, business failure was once met with penalties, whereas in the United States, it is often considered a valuable lesson.
  • Military Investment: The United States enjoys a tightly woven innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. Europe's long-term lack of spending in defense has eroded its ability in breakthrough innovation.

The Road Ahead: Reasons for Hopefulness

Despite these hurdles, one can find reasons for hope. Policymakers are growing more conscious of the severe threat and have begun to advance serious reform. Notable reports on EU competitiveness and the internal market point to the necessity of sweeping changes.

Given appropriate incentives and regulatory reforms, Europe's strengths could support much higher degrees of business-led breakthroughs.

Europe still possesses considerable strengths: high-quality human capital, excellent education systems, and world-class labs. Coupled with a vast domestic consumer base and high savings rates, these foundations could trigger a new wave of venture creation.

Importantly, even if Europe does not become the leader in creating cutting-edge tech, it can still dramatically increase economic output by implementing and tailoring advancements from other regions.

A Critical Juncture

The European Union now stands at a decisive moment. As the saying goes, economic erosion often happens "gradually and then suddenly". So far, the continent's technological decline has been steady. However, if it fails to take bold steps to tackle its structural weaknesses, today's slow erosion could turn into a rapid and permanent loss of global economic relevance.
