The atmosphere at Lazio's home ground was anything but joyful on Saturday afternoon. Lazio were trailing against Torino, a side that had let in a total of 10 goals while managing only two goals in their most recent five league matches. Fans from the Curva Nord were finishing their latest protest in a long-running conflict with president Claudio Lotito.
A Season Coming Unstitched?
Had their campaign unraveling, or did there exist a binding element maintaining its structure to start with? The club brought back Maurizio Sarri as head coach this summer, before he publicly stated that the management had not mentioned the transfer ban they were facing for accounting issues. Speculation that he could resign were unfounded, but he did say that Lotito had "deceived" him.
The Roman club were just as chaotic during matches as they were off it, beating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but falling short in their other first five games, featuring the derby della Capitale. At any given moment, it has been hard to determine if progress is being made or collapsing.
Matteo's Surprising Presence
One individual kept smiling amid the chaos. Matteo Cancellieri was not even supposed to feature for Lazio during this campaign. He spent last season with Parma on loan and, at the start of the off-season, Lazio were attempting to extend his stay a while longer. The transfer ban forced a rethink. They were unable to weaken their team without replacements.
He signed originally under Sarri's first spell, then a 20-year-old alumnus of Verona's academy. He recorded 20 matches in the league for Lazio in 2022-23, almost all of those from the bench. Their former sporting director, Igli Tare, who departed after that campaign, would later accuse Sarri of "informing all Cancellieri was destined for stardom but then not selecting him."
Discovering His True Position
Maybe Sarri was continuing to attempt to work out the specific characteristics of the player's talent. Billed as a flank player on arrival, Cancellieri yet was deployed for much of that season as an unconvincing alternative to Ciro Immobile in the striker role. Across 63 games on loan at Empoli and Parma over the last two seasons, he scored seven times. Shoehorn
