Can You Crack It? The Overlooked Netherlands Creation Which Shaped the Contemporary World
There are many contenders to claim the title of “world’s most significant innovation.” The circular axle. The movable type. The combustion motor.
According to a recent publication, though, that title belongs to a mechanised timber mill conceived through Dutch inventor Cornelis Corneliszoon during 1593.
“Prior to automated sawing, building a simple merchant vessel necessitated around ten sawyers working for 90 days,” writes Jaime Dávila. “Using wind-powered lumber mills, an identical quantity of processed timber might be manufactured in less than a week.”
Owing to this speedy automated cutter, that turned timber to planks with almost no human effort, Dutch builders could construct vessels more quickly compared to any other nation, an advantage that unleashed a century of Dutch naval, financial as well as cultural supremacy in the continent and the globe.
The First Genuine Manufacturing Device
Corneliszoon’s lumber mill, argues the writer, was “humanity’s first authentic factory apparatus.” A wind turbine rotated a gear. One component converted its rotary movement into up-and-down action to power the cutting blade. A separate mechanism changed the rotary motion into a lateral movement advancing the timber toward the cutter. A geared mechanism shifted the log forward one precise increment per stroke.
“Each element seemed modest on its own. The Dutchman’s brilliance was to integrate them in order that they acted within a precisely synchronized sequence, cutting with each descending motion while moving on every return motion. It was a remarkably intelligent use of fundamental parts.”
