A minimum of thirteen people killed and 98 injured in rail accident in Mexico.

A fatal train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the speed and management of the country's flagship public works projects.

The disaster took place on the Interoceanic Train, a line built to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.

“We shall thoroughly investigate the cause of this incident,” affirmed the country's president.

The official announced that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The leader stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those involved.

Major Initiative of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the immediate past president, whose term concluded the previous year. This project was intimately linked to his administration's strategic vision for the southeastern region.

Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to revitalize the economic fortunes of a historically poorer part of the country.

Building Management and Risks Apprehensions

The building of both train projects was managed by the army, marking a dramatic increase of its responsibilities in civilian works. They were completed at an rapid pace, surpassing forecasts to be partially inaugurated before the end of that administration.

However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously fueled ongoing apprehensions over operational security.

  • Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This includes an earlier accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-deadly derailments.

Demands for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the leader of a major opposition party called for an immediate suspension in the construction and operation of all such projects.

This stoppage was suggested pending a thorough safety audit. The party stated that the tragedy "calls for swift accountability."

In reply, the president asserted that the train had been running in total accordance with all operational standards. Promises were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the development and running of these vital projects.
